Beuatiful photographs, better than the average photo book, 24 Mar 2006

An excellent book of lovely photographs - on their own the photos are inspiring. Each photo is accompanied by expert commentary about why the photos work. What I really like about the book: 1. it is modern and up-to-date, in contrast to so many photo books that have 70s style photos and very dated cameras and equipment. 2. the quality of the print is exceptional - the colours have real pop and vibrancy, every photo is sharp and glossy. 3. there is real variety on show here - fine art, travel, portrait, still life, nature, landscapes etc. Perhaps the only thing not covered in detail is sports photography (but that is a very specific topic and needs very expensive equipment and therefore can be dealt with in other books). 4. the book is mainly about composition, colour and style. There are no pages devoted to camera type, shutter speeds, light meters etc - there are millions of books that cover that, so it's nice not to read it all over again. 5. there are no cheap (dodgy) erotic photos that often make books like this sleazy. I would have liked more detailed "how to" explanations, such as the use of thirds, dividing the image, the use of implied shapes (circles, triangles etc), but again, there are other books for that. Also, many of the pics are medium format - hence the brilliant quality - but most people use 35mm or digital. One other minor quibble - a lot of the photos don't have the exact shooting details. Overall, a very high quality book with plenty of inspiring photos.
