Amazon.co.uk Review
This book draws together into one book all current treatments for illness--both orthodox and complementary. It functions as a comprehensively indexed list of ailments, or health topics, each of which has a description, followed by a box that gives recommendations. It also has chapters on diagnostic techniques, nutrition, drugs and a chapter that explains alternative therapies.
The entries are purposely short and concise. The tone of the writing is friendly and human. It should be noted that it treats alternative therapies as if they were as legitimate and valid as "conventional" treatments which will be a relief for many, but this is not an encyclopaedia for the closed-minded. However, Dr Rajendra Sharma is careful to ensure that a balance in struck, and that the proper recommendations are given for "conventional" treatments where necessary. It is very easy to use and is a useful resource for identifying an illness or ailment and deciding which treatment to use, or if any is needed. This is the "GP" of health encyclopaedias and is an excellent first point of call for all health queries. It is written, as opposed to being merely a series of lists within each entry, and as such is perfect for the person with little real knowledge of illness. A very good, accessible guide that will be a worthy investment for a family bookshelf. --Alison Jardine
