Product Description

Review

'Enjoyable and richly illustrated' - Niall Ferguson, Sunday Times 'A very brave book which debunks many of the myths on which Scottish martyrdom is based ... The research alone makes this book hugely impressive ... A very entertaining book and a sobering one' - Gerard DeGroot, Scotland on Sunday 'A serious and informative book, packed with detail ... drawing on a wide range of sources, and enlivened with apt quotations and anecdotes' - Allan Massie, Literary Review 'The Scots were among the world's great emigrant nations with a huge impact on the USA, Canada, Asia, Australasia and elsewhere, yet effective studies of the Scottish diaspora are still few and far between. So I welcome Marjory Harper's important and stimulating overview' - T. M. Devine, author of the best-selling The Scottish Nation; A History 1700 - 2000

Gerard De Groot, Scotland on Sunday

The research alone makes this book hugely impressive...A very entertaining book and a sobering one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Readable, Memorable, Anecdotal, 18 Aug 2008
By M. BRINSLEY-MOTTO (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Harper's highly readable account of the Scottish exodus is exhaustive, stimulating and impeccably researched. There are hazardous, often deadly voyages, rapacious emigration agents, and a sense of precious resources departing for foreign shores, draining the country of talent, manpower and human capital. The luminous accounts from contemporary newspapers show a people acutely divided between a bitter quest for improved circumstances and their abiding love for their homeland. There is a heart-rending chapter on orphan emigrants sent to a controversial, uncertain and often exploitative future on foreign shores. Tells you the why, the where and the how of their exodus and occasional return.
