Product Description

Product Description

Since the Second World War the old categories of destroyer and frigate have tended to merge, a process that this book traces back to the radically different Tribal class destroyers of 1936. It deals with the development of all the modern destroyer classes that fought the war, looks at the emergency programmes that produced vast numbers of escort vessels, then analyses the pressures that shaped the post-war fleet, and continued to dominate design down to recent years. Norman Friedman is renowned for his ability to explain the policy and strategy changes that drive design decisions, and his latest book lives up to this reputation. Not content to merely describe the many classes in full technical detail, he uses previously unpublished material from his research in many archives to draw a new and convincing picture of British naval policy over the previous half-century and more. However, written from an American perspective, it also compares and contrasts the US Navy s approach to the same issues, and draws instructive parallels with some of its current problems. This is a book that everyone with a more than passing interest in British warships will want to read, and nobody professionally involved with navies can afford to miss.

About the Author

NORMAN FRIEDMAN is one of the most prominent naval analysts in the United States. His work ranges from current strategic issues to naval history, but he is particularly known for his penetrating studies of warship design. A frequent visitor to British archives, he is as much at home dealing with the Royal Navy as American naval subjects.

4.0 out of 5 stars british destroyers and frigates, 25 Dec 2008
By L. R. H. Coombs "naval man" (cheshire.UK) - See all my reviews

This book and it is a large one is worth every penny,The reason being not only does it go through the various rationals behind each design that (eventually) produced the ships that served the Royal Navy well after WW2.It also explains and illustrates with line drawings some of the designs that didn`t make it past the drawing board( some of these seem quite bizzare). There are also a range of drawings of ships that made it into service which are sharp and clear, these will be usefull to the naval modeller as well. The photo contents are good, the pictures bright and clear.Being ex RN,I found this book very good and brought back many happy memories. The technical details are good but not too deep for the average reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars A superb book - if a little difficult for the non-specialist, 17 Aug 2008
By C. E. Taylor (Warwickshire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a truly wonderful book for the keen warship enthusiast.
It covers not only Destroyers and Frigates, but the Sloops and Corvettes as well. Written by one of the leading modern period warship historians the research and new information are outstanding. It provides not only detailed ship information, with much new information, but also a deep informed insight never before available into the ship designs .

The good points

# A very comprehensive approach to the subject, done in a professional manner and with full source citation and a good index.

# Excellent collection of well-reproduced photographs, especially for the wartime period, with comprehensive notes to each .

# Numerous well-reproduced plans and diagrams, mostly by Alan Raven and Dave Baker - arguably two of the best warship draftsmen of this period. There are usually a number of variants shown for each class, again with very informative extended captions.

# The full ship list, which is included as an appendix, is very useful and contains some items not normally given.

The bad points

# The ships data tables, although useful are rather sparse and should have been expanded to incorporated more details, including gun and mount mark numbers.

# Due to the scope of the book being the overall development of these warship types the author has attempted to tell the full story as a continuous narrative - not just specifically by ship classes. This in many cases makes it quite difficult to get the whole story in looking up an individual class, especially in determining which details were in the final ships as built. This book is somewhat easier than the author's otherwise excellent previous books on American warships however as he has tried more successfully to keep class information together. However anyone not familiar with the ships of the period may well find it a struggle.

# Understandably there are quite a few obvious typographic errors, and there is signs that completion of the book was rather rushed. Situation normal !

Conclusion - Buy this book - for the photos and plans even if you are not a specialist, for the new complete overall picture if you are.
