5.0 out of 5 stars The info that you needed!, 5 Mar 2002
Paul Kemp have gathered in this book all his knowledge on this specific matter: the midget submarines, submersibles and human torpedoes of World War II.

After several books published on this issue, like the also highly recommended "Underwater Warriors", Paul Kemp (who needed no introduction) has produced a real gem, with several new photographs, line drawings and as a bonus two sets of plans (X-craft and Type XXVII Seehund).

With an excellent layout, the history is well told over five chapters, always with the precious graphic help (one picture is worth a thousand words!!).
Covering almost all operational crafts on both sides (Allies and Axis), Paul give us the necessary info, either you are an Amateur Historian, Modeller or just a WWII buff.
Same crafts received more attention than others:
the British Chariot, the Italian CB Class or the amazing British X-Craft. The neglected one's are the IJN Koryu, Kairyu and Kaiten I and II, the German Molch and Hecht, with very little info given to the reader.
On the final chapter of the book, after-war projects are mentioned, like the US X-1.

My only regret about this book is the fact that doesn't include any colour picture, coloured plates or any mention to paint schemes on this sort of crafts. I understand it is hard or very difficult to be sure on this particular field, but it would be a great help for persons with "the modelling curse".

As a modeller, or better, a model builder, the best thing that I can say in good word about this book is that, thanks to this book, my latest works have been prize winners in several contests, supporting my models with accurate drawings and pictures that judges often don't see on this particular overlooked matter, but specially because it makes the hobby more fun, being able to correct same manufacturers faults!!

I found this book to be an excellent value for money and highly recommend it for any one who is interested on this subject.

Thanks Paul Kemp and Chatham Publishing.
Please keep up the good work!!

Rui Matos (aka Skipper)
