1.0 out of 5 stars How not to make a guitar, 9 April 2008
By C. Garrett "Clifford Garrett" (Sussex, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"I want to do more than show you how to make a guitar ...".

In my opinion it would have been preferable if Rik had kept his ideas to himself. Although he does demonstrate his own peculiar idea of innovative ways to produce a Classical Guitar, I cannot recommend anybody follow this guide. It is truly amateurish and demonstrates what I can only assume is Rik's wholly self taught approach to guitar making. In my opinion, any resulting guitar will be in spite of this book rather than through it.

Although I have issues with some of the woodworking practices advocated in Roy Courtnall's book "Making Master Guitars", I would recommend his book to any aspiring Luthier over Rik's attempt. The other book that I would suggest is Cumpiano's "Guitar Making". These two books together will provide as much information as is available from most of the other books together; I know because I've read most of them.
As a trained Cabinet-Maker and Luthier, I talk with some experience of my own. I'm afraid I found the kitchen table production methods advocated in Rik's book very poor. His home-made clamps, etc., although admirable in concept are rather crude. His instructions on inlaying purflings seem either a misguided attempt to re-invent tried and tested methods or betrays a basic lack of understanding; not really the best traits required from a teacher!
