Product Description

Product Description

The MG X-Power SV is MG Rover's supercar. Developed by the MG team under chief designer Peter Stevens, who is also responsible for the McLaren F1, the SV originated in Italy as the De Tomaso Mangusta. This detailed full-colour book tells the story of how the Ford V8-engined SV was developed from the Mangusta into a good looking high-performance car that has won plaudits from the press and which is still in the process of full launch on to the open market and the motorsport scene. Written with the full co-operation of the MG team, this book is a fascinating window on to the gestation and birth of a new sports car.

4.0 out of 5 stars MG'S FIRST AND FINAL FORAY INTO THE SUPERCAR WORLD., 10 Jul 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The wild MG X-Power SV was based on the defunct De Tomaso Magusta which the ailing British company bought in the mid 2000's. Peter Steven's and his design team encombered with little money to develop any new cars had to dig deep for the SV. It was a mad idea to take on the might of TVR and even Porsche at there own game. Stevens re-bodied the odd looking Magusta to a bizzare carbon fibre MG look SV from the more sobre shape of the Magusta. So they where hampered with not only the lack of cash but with a monohull of the old flawed De Tomaso. But with much work and an engine from the V8 Ford Mustang built the crazy SV almost from nothing. It is still a quite good looking car from some angles but if you look close the Magusta body sides look intact !. With utter brute power with the nitrous boost the SV could reach up to around 190MPH. But MG had almost lost interest in the project before it was road ready with rushed development. And it had failed to market the car with so little cash to spend even on the standard range. So it passed up free advertising such as slot's on tv series such as Footballer's Wives and other shows. They even snubbed the star car slot on the movie 'Swordfish' due to supply problems !. So very few Sv's where ever built in the end before the company went bust in 2005. Now the supercar is like a expensive plea of panic by the company that the public couldn't afford or wanted. Stevens had planned other versions of the SV and even a le-man's car but MG collapsed. I love all thing's B.L , MG , Rover despite my comments here and was very sad to see the company close. But poor managment and no product plan which spanned decades can not be excused and the writing was on the wall not only for the SV project but the company. It was a big project that came to late and a radical change in direction that nobody expected. And some would say misjudged when it should have been spending the cash on a new road car range. This is a brilliant book and covers the birth of the car to it's demise in a frank and informative way.
