5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite fly-fishing book, 12 Sep 2006
By P. White (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is my favourite fly fishing book. I say fishing, rather than tying, because it is packed full of gems of advice on how to fish the flies - not just how to tie them.

The book is simply but effectively organised. It is broken down into sections on nymph fishing, dry flies, wet flies, and lure fishing. Up to now, I've concentrated on lure fishing, and the lure fishing section is excellent. It describes the lure fishing techniques of ten top class anglers, together with their "secret" flies. Early this season, while thumbing through this section I was struck by how many flies used the "fritz" material. I ordered lots of this and while waiting for it to arrive I stocked up on fritz flies at my local tackle shop. One of these flies - the fritz zonker - has caught over 80% of my fish this season. Ok, the fritz zonker isn't in the book, but the inspiration for me to use it came directly from the book.

Three anglers having pink flies in their collection also struck me. I tied up a couple of pink fritz zonkers, and on two occasions after finding the fishing slowing down while using my usual flies, I tried this pink job. Both times, I got a fish in the first cast. This shows the ideas you can get from just browsing through this book. I've also had success with one of the book's flies: the "white fritz cat", which is tied on a double hook. I hadn't considered doubles before reading this book, but this fly now catches at the same rate as my zonkers, and it is rarely off my cast.

On my last fishing trip, the fishing was very difficult and I eventually gave up on lures. I was fishing with a hopper dropper and at one point I made a hash of a cast. As I was quickly retrieving it, the best fish of the day came up and grabbed the hopper that I was inadvertently pulling across the surface. While looking through the book again for this review, I noticed that two anglers in the dry fly section mentioned that pulling hoppers is an effective way to fish.

Having become reasonably successful at lure fishing, I'm now studying the dry fly section. Eventually, I might even become good enough to succeed with nymphs; though I'm not convinced about the wets. I'm confident that this book will help me to make progress using these techniques.

This book has had a huge impact on my season. If you are a beginner to trout fly-fishing, then buy yourself a book such as "Fly fishing for trout" by Church and Gathercole, and ideally a good introductory book on fly tying. This book is the next one you should buy. If you are beyond the beginner stage, buy this book immediately. Highly recommended.
