Product Description

Product Description

When creating karate kata, the Okiniwan masters included deadly techniques targeting vital points. But they kept these techniques secret from outsiders and, when karate was exported to Japan, it appears they chose not to pass on their full knowledge of vital-point striking. Here, Ashley Croft demystifies this hidden corner of the art and explores its practical application. He explores the historical perspectives - the evolution of karate, the possible intentions of the ancient masters and the development of vital-point striking - together with analysing the kata, identifying the purpose of the moves and developing workable combinations using the various vital points. The author also covers anatomy and Eastern medical concepts; the meridians, acupoints and the vital energy flow (Qi). In addition, he describes, and shows the location of, the pressure points and the practical application of pressure-point strikes.

About the Author

Ashley Croft is a fourth dan in Shotokan Karate and in Ao Denkou Jitsu, and he has trained with some of the top instructors in the world. He has taught karate for over fifteen years. He is currently chief instructor of the Chiltern Karate Association.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book, 19 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This book informs you with great detail all the pressure points on the human body, it tells you the angle of the strike and force required to gain the right result. If you have never heard of pressure points before but practise Karate or another form of martial arts then this book will serve you well, if you do know about pressure points this book will help you to gain a better understanding of these points. This book also tells you alot more, besides pressure points, which include to name a few, history, law and theories. I would strongly recommend this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for the most part..., 16 Jun 2007
By Alexander J. Malt "Caladin Ho" (Durham) - See all my reviews

The problem with the book is that pretty much every kata application within it is very 'obviously' applied: By obvious I mean that you really don't need this book to work them out, all you need is a basic anatomical diagram showing the vital points of the human body and knowledge of the kata. Basically a trained six year old could produce the same results.

I do not hold that the book is completely useless. It does have a very clear and concise account of the history of Karate in it, which is a valuable insight into explaining Kata. But this isn't the main reason to buy the book, hence it has two stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Expected a lot more, 1 Feb 2006
By Jc O'brien "jiminmunich" (Munich) - See all my reviews

I was expecting great things from this book due to the Rick Clark connection sadly this was not the case.

The applications are the standard ones which any karate instructor would show you. There is nothing new or insightful in this book or remotely 'secret'. Most of the techniques are brown belt level at the highest. Nearly all of the application is based on standard karate attacks making the SD value of many of them dubious at best.

Sadly I have to say there are better books on the market
