Product Description

Product Description

Since the 1970s, Mike Sutcliffe has devoted his time to the rescue and restoration of several examples of the early Leyland motorbus. The Mike Sutcliffe Collection is considered by many to be one of the most important collection of early buses in the world. This title tells the story of the man and his buses, from the 1908 Leyland X-type, the oldest restored British-built motorbus in the world to the London Pirate "Chocolate Express" of 1925.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars A thirty year passion, 30 Jun 2003

(REAL NAME)
There will be few bus enthusiasts who will not identify completely with the description that Mike Sutcliffe gives of his boyhood and teenage discovery of buses. Evocative as the chapter is, that is not the main substance of this fascinating book. This is the man who has devoted many hours and considerable personal treasure in rescuing wrecks and transforming them into things of antique beauty. He has been responsible for seven complete restorations including London Central X2 of 1908, the oldest restored British bus. For each one of these he describes its Leyland background, the history of the actual vehicle and then the story of how each painstaking restoration was achieved. Each of these marvels was achieved in about two years. The secret? “By sheer hard work and determination, and meticulous planning” is the author’s answer.
I found this book an eye opener for another reason. How does the man manage to fit in so much? As well as the actual restoration of the buses, he runs around the country to find spares and parts. He has an accountancy practice, a wife and family and writes a compendious book on his life’s hobby.
For anyone who has a more than a passing interest in the early days of Leyland this is wonderful book with so many historic and colourful pictures. I counted well over 400 plus assorted diagrams.
