Product Description

Product Description

The saloon cars produced by Mercedes-Benz during the 1960s and 1970s were hailed in their day for their sophistication and quality and the intervening years have taken away little of that respect. Many of the rugged cars from the 1970s are still in regular use, while the cars from the swinging 1960s are increasingly regarded as style icons - the perfect chic transport for artists and celebrities. The author takes a sideways look at these impressive cars, intertwining history, technical detail and anecdote. The book also includes discussion of the saloon-based cabriolets and diesels from this era.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been better, 14 Mar 2008
By N. Baylis "NAB" (UK) - See all my reviews

This book covers an interesting range of cars produced by Mercedes from the late 50s through to the late 70s. Quite a few photos are not seen in other books and so if you are a fan this book is a useful addition. The text is written in a subjective style which is very readable although as a buyers guide it is not sufficently accurate or detailed. My main criticism is, as noted by other reviewers, the dreadful proof-reading: several pictures bear no relation to the accompanying script. Hopefully the publishers will prepare a second edition where these errors can be corrected.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good readable history for Merc fans, 20 Dec 2006
By A. Charles "chazchuzzlewitt" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
this book, as the title suggests, covers 60's and 70's Mercedes Saloons including the W114, 115, 116 and 123 series, with many period photos and technical data. It's produced in typical 'motorbooks' style, in that it's mostly b&w photos with a centre colour section.
Obviously written by a fan and user of these classic cars, it's an enjoyable read and breaks from the norm of dull, geeky text that often lets these types of books down. There's plenty of info offered, including a good section of Mercedes history and also practical advice on buying a classic.
The only things that let it down are some overly subjective views in places and a couple of technical mistakes, but overall a good history of these classic cars and I would recommended it to a Mercedes or classic car fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars They Don't Make'em Like They Used To..., 18 Nov 2007
Reading through this book is depressing - if you own a late model Mercedes. Once upon a time Mercedes-Benz cars WERE overengineered and built like Mosler safes, but unfortunately this no longer is the case.

This book conveys the original Daimler Benz philosophy behind those early cars very well. The author provides some thoughtful insights into the environment into which the cars were launched, although at times the text becomes rather opinionated.

The big let-down for the book is the very, very (2x) poor proof reading: Many of the photos carry captions that relate to other models. Bruno Sacco's (the recently-retired head of design) name is misspelled, which is inexcusable and demonstrates superficial research. Much of the text relating to the various engine configurations available in the 60's is confusing (or confused?), and as a result the author gets the model numbers mixed up. The frequency with which this happens is irritating.

I picked up my new copy for £3 at a sale. I would have been rather disappointed had I paid full price. My rating is based on the price I paid.
