Product Description

Review

"This book is unique in that it provides detailed theory and explanation of the karate techniques, but presented in a manner that can be easily followed and understood by all. It is comprehensive and metioulous, and contains a depth of material unsurpassed in a book of this nature." Rick Clark

Product Description

Shotokan Karate is one of the most widely practised styles of karate in the world. For most of its history it has been taught clandestinely, with past masters only entrusting their secrets to a select few pupils. This approach has changed dramatically over the last 75 years, with karate being exported throughout the world. Topics include: fundamental principles and philosophy; main striking, blocking and kicking techniques; detailed instructions of moves with descriptions of the most common mistakes; flexibility training and the physiology of stretching, and finally provides an insight into the mysterious art of Kyusho Jutsu.

There has always been a degree of mystique behind karate, possibly due to the fact that for centuries it has been taught in secret, surrounded by folklore and anecdotes of superhuman feats performed by past masters. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars A first grade guide to what to do and not to do!, 31 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Shotokan Karate: In Search of Excellence (Paperback)
Whatever the reason you are studying karate this book will help you to get it right. There is an excellent explanation of where each party of the body should or perhaps more important should not be, with good photographs to back up the explanations. I am studying Jukaikido, which is a mixture of many Martical Arts, this book has been of great benefit to improve the Karate aspects of my discipline. The only thing I had hoped would be in the book, and was not, was an explanation of how to do the first Katas. This information I gained from "Shotokan Karate 10th kyu to 6th kyu" by Sensei Enoeda. I found these two books complemented each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for all Shotokan grades., 7 Jun 2001
This review is from: Shotokan Karate: In Search of Excellence (Paperback)
Ashley Croft's book Shotokan Karate is an excellent guide to this style of karate for beginners right through to senior grades. Not only does it make for a very interesting read, covering various aspects such as the history of karate, traditions, and terminology, but it is also an excellent book for reference purposes. He covers all the fundamental basics of shotokan, blocking, striking, kicking and stances. However, not only does he give a thorough breakdown of how to perform each technique but he also lists the most common mistakes, and how the karate-ka can avoid making them. A must for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'A very interesting read, suitable for beginners', 17 Nov 2001
By James (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shotokan Karate: In Search of Excellence (Paperback)
The book starts off by telling you about Shotokan Karate itself before actually moving onto any moves etc. It does this very well as it gives you a brief review of it's creation, without being boring. Superb illustrations for the beginner to review. Ace!
