3.0 out of 5 stars technical information and background information is good ., 8 April 2001
By A Customer
The information about how to make felt is good and is easy to follow for the beginner. The photographs and diagrams are really helpful and demonstrate the processes well. There is some background information of the history and geography of feltmaking which is interesting. Unfortunately there are many photographs of a poor quality which do not show the items to their best advantage and this lets the book down. The promise of the cover is not fulfilled in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring photos, adult projects, progressive techniques., 8 Oct 2003
By Boudicca (England) - See all my reviews
I was excited about finding this book. I am a beginner at feltmaking and have been disappointed with other books on the subject that have child-orientated or 'hobby/crafty' projects. This book, in contrast, is written in a workshop format which takes the worker from 'beginner' to 'expert', building progressively by adding new techniques and skills in each chapter. The projects chosen are varied and have an adult appeal in their design, allowing the worker to use their own creative skills and experiment with colour and pattern.
I found the Gallery Photo section inspiring, showing what different leading artists have produced and exhibited. There are also sections on aftercare for the completed felt, history and culture of feltmaking, equipment and materials needed, profiles of leading artists, suppliers, museums to visit, bibliography and information about The International Feltmakers Association. I found some of the suggested websites were unavailable and the photography could have been better. The spiral-bound format does make it easier to use the book as an instruction manual when trying out the workshops.
I recommend this book to other creative embroiderers wishing to expand their knowledge and use of fabrics, textures and stitchwork to include handmade felt.
