Product Description

Product Description

Many clock repairers carry out excellent work but avoid cutting their own wheels and pinions, fearing it is too complicated and involved. This book, written by an experienced clock and tool maker, aims to dispel those fears and offers a step-by-step guide to a satisfying aspect of horology. This book is written for both the amateur and professional involved in the making and restoring of clocks, and for anyone who intends to start building up a workshop and requires a guide to the equipment and how to use it. Sections include: the theory of gearing explained with basic fomulae, instruction on how to cut wheels and pinions, methods of making cutters, details on crossing wheels and mounting to arbours, and instruction on finishing and replacing worn pivots.

About the Author

J Malcolm Wild is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute. He started his own company manufacturing clock makers' tools and restoring antique clocks in 1977.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificient practical and historical reference, 24 Nov 2001
By tsugaclive (England) - See all my reviews
Every page of this superb book contains several photographs or illustrations. As a model engineer in the process of constructing my first clock, it was an inspirational source of methodology in construction of both the gears themselves and the tooling required to make them. I can't praise this book enough - a true masterpiece

5.0 out of 5 stars Same again, 3 Nov 2007
By Ken "bletchley_badger" (Bletchley, Bucks) - See all my reviews
I have to agree with all the points made by the previous reviewer. The clarity of the illustrations and explanations are this book's greatest strength. If you have more than just a passing interest in practical horology, this book is a "must have".
