Product Description

Product Description
The Vickers VC10 could have been a worldwide successful aeroplane but for the politics that surrounded it. This text tells the full story of its design and development using original documentation and interviews with the design and flight team.

5.0 out of 5 stars This nicely compliments the other book "Swift Silent Superb", 20 Oct 2000
I already enjoyed the other VC10 book "Swift Silent Superb" by Scott Henderson and expected this book to be similar in content so I didn't rush to buy it. Instead I bullied my local library into getting a copy and have had it on loan ever since! Now I'm hoping my wife will get me my own copy for Christmas. This is a great book with more pictures about the VC10 structure and building process. The author has dug a little deeper into the Vickers Archives and shows some surprising VC10 variants and precursors. If you like (or love) the VC10 this book is a must, especially combined with Swift Silent Superb. Buy it. Now if only BAe would make some more VC10s and I could fly (in) one again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Presentation!, 27 Mar 2004
Already owning the book Swift, Silent, Superb by Scott Henderson, I didn't think I would need to buy this particular book. It didn't have as nice a cover, or as alluring a title as the former book.

However, time passed, and as the VC10 is my favourite aircraft of all time, I decided to take the (exceptionally expensive in $A) plunge.

Picture wise, the book is more extensive than any other book on the aircraft, with a lot of coverage of the development period and "paper" aircraft than I'd seen before. The author has extensively tapped the old archives in order to present as full a picture as possible.

All pictures are black and white throughout except a colour section on shiny paper in the middle. Some of the shots here are quite rare and as such the quality of them vary from exceptional to grainy.

Text wise, the book tends to drag with the sheer amount of detail that can be presented at times. An example of this is the names of all the department heads involved in developing the aircraft - this would have been better set as a table or appendix. Additionally, when reading the initial chapters, I got a feeling that some things were repeated too many times - giving me a bit of a "get on with it!" feel.

The book is a large hardcover format, with an easy to read font, glorious high quality paper (for some reason it's really noticable!), and is not a re-hash of the same information. Am I glad I bought it? Absolutely! Haven't been able to put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 28 Mar 2001
A well researched book that tells the full story of the VC10 and possible developments. In some ways it was an annoying book when you realised the missed opportunties there were in the VC10 and its predessor the Vickers V1000, all because of government ignorance of all matters to do with aviation and a British airline that wanted to buy American
