3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photographs, good descriptions, needs expanding., 29 Oct 1999
By simon.james@james-co.co.uk (Bedford, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The introduction gives a concise synopsis of the general structure of wood and the two main types (softwood, hardwood). Also in the introduction is an excellent visual key system to describe the working properties of each wood described later in the text. A brief diagram in the introduction to explain the different cros-sections of the photographs used throughout the book would have been useful at this point.

Following the introduction the book goes imeadiately onto specific woods describing their general appearance, physical properties, general use, and the occasional anecdote. Written descriptions are supported by excellent colour photographs of radial, tangential, and cross sections of the wood in question. Additional photographs of pieces showing the final finishes obtainable would have been ideal.

I personally would like/need to have more detail on how the main trunk and branches of a tree are cut to give different types of planking, cross-sections and the purpose that these typical cuts are used for (especially what not to use them for), so a seperate chapter briefly outlining the use of timber in woodworking, particularly turning, cabinetmaking and joinery would be greatly appreciated.

Overall a good introduction to woods that I have never heard of, which has given me an appreciation of what they look like and how to start using them. What I would like to find now, is this book with more information given in the text (as described above), including photographs of the woods 'in use' for which I would willingly pay significantly more. However, I appreciate that it must be difficult to satisfy all individual requirements.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nicely printed, 18 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This book was printed beautifully, and expensively in color. The intent was to focus on the woods themselves, and not to get lost in finishing and other aspects of woodworking. These aspects have been covered abundantly in other books, of which the small book by Jackson & Day is the most succesful example (translated into American, German, French, etc).

Unfortunately any effect the book might have is spoiled by the photographs. Nobody thought to prepare the woods before photographs were taken: the wood surfaces were not cut or planed but sanded (truly horrible!). Maybe this was done to please the many woodworkers who never get to see wood in its true splendor, but consistently hide the wood to hand by sanding everything. Although the photographs are not entirely worthless they are not one tenth of what they might be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 3 Jan 2002

Excellent book that I found particularly useful about the properties of each type of timber. The different types and their prime production purposes is good. Well written and easy to follow.
