Introduction
Handmade papers have a special quality all of their own. Whether delicate and subtle or robust and vibrant, no two sheets are the same, even when made from the same vat of pulp and by the same hands. The process of making a sheet of paper is undeniably fun, but it is the excitement of experimenting with new decorative techniques and colour combinations that continually fascinates me.
If inspiration evades you, start with your surroundings. I live on the far north coast of Scotland, and the sea and all it casts ashore are an ever-changing source of inspiration: driftwood with its sand blasted sea-weathered textures; delicate patterns and bold shapes found in countless types of shells; mysterious colours floating in rock pools; brilliantly painted fishing boats. They are all a feast for the eye.
Here, I have combinded these textures, forms and colours with a vast array of decorative techniques - from water cuts and rain paper, to printmaking and burning - to create a series of stunning handmade papers.
I show how the binding of a book can be creative, too: the stitching can be decorative as well as strong, and the threads and ribbons need not be traditional bookbinding materials. By using an imaginative approach to every aspect of binding, you will add a very personal touch.
With the projects shown here, my aim is to inspire you to make your own unique books, whether for cherished possesions, as a permanent reminder of a seaside holiday, a favourite walk, childhood memories or family recipes.
