This is a beautifully written mixture of natural history and gardening know-how. If it was bigger and more expensive it would almost be a book to leave on a coffee table to dip into. This is not to say that it is'nt a working tome because it is, filled with information, lists and clear line drawings in pagefuls! There has been a lot of thought over presentation which is enhanced by some stunning colour photography. My favourite has to be the frog opposite the contents page. Nothing can be all things to all people, the only criticism would be that if you were interested in gardening for a particular species, e.g. bats, you are in for a tough time as contents are arranged by type of habitat, such as woodland, wetland etc. However, it earns itself a place on the bookshelf, whether to be used as a reference volume or to savour the photography.
