5.0 out of 5 stars Tune-up your plane!, 15 Jun 2002
By Mr J Noden (Southampton, Hants United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I purchased this book following the viewing of an interview with the author on a Discovery Channel programme. The author is an acknowledged expert in the art of making hand tools really work for you. Following the details on how to tune-up a Bailey plane I have made a massive improvement on a modern Stanley 04 plane and some improvement on an older Record 05 plane (the Record still out performs the Stanley!).

The book primarily concentrates on tools and how to use them. The text, diagrams and pictures are clear and concise.

If you are looking for a book full of projects then this is not for you but if you wish to improve your cabinet-making ability then buy it.

Although the book appears to be aimed at the serious/experienced amateur and the professional it would be really useful for those just starting fine woodworking. I can't wait for volume 3!

5.0 out of 5 stars An introduction to the best therapy I know!, 27 May 2005
As a 'recovering has-been' (trained as a joiner 40 years ago, left the trade and now re-learning) I can thoroughly recommend David's books and videos to anybody wanting to improve their woodworking. His secret seems to be a combination of absolutely meticulous preparation and what you might call 'de-complication' - simple tricks save time and effort while making fine tolerances more attainable. He thinks laterally, challenges assumptions and solves problems from the roots up.
Just a few short months of applying his techniques in my spare time has seen my own work move onto a different plane - in more senses than one!
Fine, accurate work is within just about anyone's grasp with the help of these books. Get them, or forever struggle unnecessarily!
Oh, and by the way, his website's worth a visit, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars David Charlesworth- Fine Furniture Maker, 24 April 2003
I have been on two courses of one week at his workshop and have purchased both his books. I frequently refer to them to remind myself of his teachings. Follow his instructions on how to fettle a hand plane and you will understand how he can produce high quality furniture using such tools. The illustrations are of good quality and the writing is clear and concise.
