Product Description

Product Description

Legendary Rat Pat singer and actor Dean Martin has perhaps become even more respected since his death. Today fans of all ages download his songs from the Net and purchase his recordings on CD. His extraordinary renaissance is detailed in this absorbing biography of the man the world knew as the eternal essence of cool. From his early days as a trainee boxer to work as a croupier in the local casino, where he proved to be a big hit with the women who frequented his table, this compelling biography dispels the myths about the consummate professional who worked hard to cultivate a reputation for laziness. Michael Freedland has had exclusive access to Martin's family and friends, including some who have never spoken of Dino before. Freedland takes an indepth look at Martin's career, as well as his lifelong friendship with Frank Sinatra, his chronic claustrophobia and his manic fear of hospitals. Here at last is the truth behind the iconic singer, including his three failed marriages and the reconciliation with Jeanne, his second wife.

About the Author

Michael Freedland is a freelance journalist and broadcaster specialising in personality interviews and acclaimed Hollywood biographies. He wrote and presented the Radio 2 series on Dean Martin, the story of a man he himself interviewed, both in London and Hollywood (a rare event for Dean did not enjoy talking to journalists). Freedland also met Jerry Lewis and numerous others quoted in this definitive biography. His previous work includes 'Jack Lemmon: Some Like it Cool' (1861055102) and 'Liza with a "Z'" (1861056818), both published by Robson Books. He lives in Elstree, Hertfordshire.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was ok but not what I expected, 3 Oct 2005
It is praised as one of the best books about Dean Martin and it was an easy read but I feel, I could have learned so much more, but I didn't. The last 10 years of his life, where he lost his son, is a little chapter of about 20 pages.
I feel, I will have to get a second biography just to learn more about his wives, Jerry Lewis and the Clan.
But for a quick overview it's recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Superficial at best!, 15 Jan 2007

(REAL NAME)
Freedlands biography is a handsomely mounted tome, ticking all the correct boxes regarding the life and times of Dean Martin, it covers all the relevant areas, childhood, discovery and stardom, then superstardom and eventual decline, though it is such a dry depiction that this reader was left struggling to maintain interest,

To be fair there is nothing particularily wrong with this book it is simply that it comes across a selection of frequently recounted anecdotes and reminiscences that any self respecting Dino fan will have heard countless times before, that said, for anyone wishing a general overview of the man's life and times it is of value, however for anyone wanting to get below the surface then, in this readers opinion, head for Tosches Dino Bio instead, far superior and far more comprehensive.
