Product Description

Product Description

On 7 October 2001, Debra and Andrew Veal set off from Tenerife in a rowing boat. They were the only mixed pair in the Ward Evans Transatlantic Rowing Challenge. After two weeks, Andrew - despite being the more experienced rower - abandoned ship, having realised he was terrified of the open seas. Seizing the opportunity to pit herself single-handedly against the ocean, Debra spent over three months tackling one of the world's toughest sporting challenges on her own, at the same time testing the limits of her psychological strength and endurance. This is Debra's account of her solo trip, in which she dramatically conveys the feelings of exhilaration, the emotional lows, the inner calm, the loneliness, and the final triumph.

About the Author

Prior to rowing the Atlantic, Debra set up The Well Hung Art Company on the Internet and became its managing director. Debra has remained in as MD of her company, but she now presents TV programmes, including Grandstand and the new design show Big Strong Boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!, 18 Jun 2003
By Davinia Ankerson (Southampton) - See all my reviews
What a wonderful book! I couldn't put it down. Very rarely do I read a book that has such an effect on me and this one certainly broke the mould. Debra's descriptive ability, not only in terms of the extraordinary surroundings she found herself in but also her depiction of the emotional rollercoaster she found herself on, will leave you speechless. The tale is one of battling against the odds and sometimes against her own better judgement - and definitely one you will be recommending to all your friends. A completely inspiring and motivating depiction of an adventure most of us only dream of and I class myself as very lucky to have been shown it in such an interesting and captivating way. All in all, a thoroughly good read - buy this book - you'll thank me for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring...., 1 Oct 2002
By katie Miller (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
having not followed the ward evens rowing challenge i only picked up this book because i myself am a rower. what i found in this book inspired me beyond my wildest dreams! this story is about an ordinary women having ordinary dreams but she sets out to acheive these dreams. The determinaton and courage she put through in this book are amazing and some of the things she encountered were unbelivable. This book isnt just for people who followed the ward evens rowing challenge, or for people interested in rowing, it is for those who are looking to be inspired by the amazing bravery of a women who could have given up at any time....

4.0 out of 5 stars A Feast of Adventure, 27 Aug 2003

Sadly, I only cottoned on to Debra's extraordinary trip in it's final stages, so I was delighted to read her book. It starts with a little about her early life. The account of her relationship with her husband is a little cloying (I always wondered what sort of people leave their wedding reception in a hot air balloon) but frankly given subsequent events, she can be forgiven anything. Her decision to voyage solo after her husband was unable to continue is riveting and astounding. Literally battling against the odds, both mental and physical, on minimal sleep (she must regularly scan the horizon to prevent being run down by container ships). The beauty and magic of such a unique journey is truly awesome and the lighthearted moments balance it nicely - read it if only to discover how Woody, the ship's bear, makes it through the Tomato Soup Disaster Day!
