Product Description

Book Description

It's easy to see why PHP is such a popular language among web developers. This open source scripting language is easy-to-learn, yet surprisingly powerful and extensible. For example, PHP can be used to dynamically create and manipulate complex graphics through the use of extension libraries such as GD.

In this book we show you how to write PHP code that will create professional-looking web graphics and images "on the fly". The book is packed with useful code examples and discussion of best practices. Some of the issues we cover include:

Resizing and thumbnail creation

Creating image maps

Merging, copying, cropping and rotating images

Storing images in a database: best practices

Drawing lines and shapes, and color issues

Creating frames and shadows on images

Using text in images: fonts, size, wrapping and justification, creating buttons

Creating professional looking graphs and charts

1.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete., 8 Oct 2003
Since the Apress takeover it appears most of the source and graphics files for this book has disappeared, which ruins the learning process throughout the book. Media is only available for a few chapters later in the book.

I have contacted Apress and Wrox about this, neither have the source or media.

Do not buy this book unless you are willing to spend time recreating the graphics files that are promised on the front of the book (but not provided) unless you want to just use it for reference.

A pity, it could have been a very very good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book about a normally glossed over subject, 23 April 2004

Great! a book dedicated to PHP graphics. This book assumes good knowledgeof PHP and some knowledge of graphics manipulation in general. Theexamples are well laid out and in the correct order, starting with a verysimple 7 line program to sophisticated graphics manipulation and chartcreation classes. It is up to date, covering the GD and GD2 PHPextensions, and also Imagemagick and Netpbm. Basically, it covers justabout all you'd want to do with graphics in PHP including thumbnails, filtering, scaling, shadows, fonts etc. etc. I've found it extremelyuseful for my own projects (I've been a professional developer for 18years). It is very handy having this smaller book dedicated to PHPgraphics rather than having to flick through some 1000+ page PHP monsterwork that only supplies graphics titbits.
