Product Description
Synopsis
This title looks at AXIS, (previously known as Apache SOAP) - the most widely used Java implementation of SOAP. The rapid uptake of SOAP based web services has lead to the continuous and rapid development of the SOAP specification - putting pressure on the various implementations to keep up. AXIS will address the performance issues inherent in Apache-SOAP and create a new architecture, which will be more extensible. The book starts with an introduction to AXIS and web services, highlighting the goals of the Apache AXIS project. The key to exploiting the power of AXIS is in understanding its architecture and how to extend it. This book will show you how to do this by writing your own custom message handlers. Then it moves on to using the new parts of the SOAP specification AXIS implements and Java 2 Enterprise Edition integration. All this builds towards a full case study based around a supply chain application for a car manufacturer and its dealers. Topics covered include: what AXIS is and why it's needed; the Architecture of AXIS in detailL; how to extend the capabilities of AXIS with custom handlers; the advanced SOAP capabilities that AXIS provides; building a full supply chain solution based on AXIS; interoperability with Microsoft Client implementations; and what the future holds for AXIS and SOAP.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice for starters, 19 Feb 2003
I am an AXIS newbie , i have started working with AXIS because of my final year project. I found out that the Apache documentation was not so newbie friendly and some real newbie details were floating around. The mailing list was a bit of a help but again a bit restrictive. After reading a couple of chapters from this book, helped me to get going in a very very easy way! The best thing about this book, is that its very effective when it comes to show you the path in the AXIS development world!

The bad thing is that it misses some points, in some parts but you will only be aware of them after you read most of the book and you have enough experience from AXIS!Some examples may not work but this is not the books' fault since AXIS is on a development roadmap at the memont

Generally I felt that this book was one of the reasons that make me going with AXIS in a short period of time!
So for AXIS newbies..definetely A MUST!
