Product Description

Book Description
MSXML (Microsoft XML Core Services) version 4.0 is a free, feature-rich server component for all types of XML processing, including XML, XSLT, and Schemas. It has comprehensive support for W3C and other major specifications, as well as many proprietary enhancements. This makes MSXML 4.0 a useful and robust tool that can be used as the processing engine behind a wide range of XML-based applications.

This book is arranged in three parts. The first is a reference to the support for XML standards and proprietary extensions within MSXML. The next section shows how to achieve typical application functionality, using the supported technologies in a practical context. The last section contains several case studies that demonstrate bringing together the individual tasks into complete applications.

What this book covers?

DOM and SAX2 support in MSXML

XPath and XSLT (W3C specifications and earlier implementations) for transformations on the server and client

Schemas (XSD and XDR) for validation on the server and client

Styling XML with CSS, VML, and behaviors in IE

Implementing linking and pointing for web applications

Transmitting, handling, and manipulating data on the server and client

Optimizing system architecture for improved performance

Performance, scalability, and security techniques

Case studies showing MSXML in real world applications

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive coverage of MSXML available on paper, 28 Feb 2002
By A Customer
MSXML4 contains an awful lot of valuble functionality for programmers using XML on Windows. It also contains some older "preview" technology, and it's sometimes difficult to determine exactly what you need to do for one or the other from the Microsoft documentation.

This book contains a close look at what is in MSXML - relevant to all existing versions, not just 4.0, and describing how the different versions interact with other tools such as Internet Explorer. It does not attempt to teach XML (though it does have a few quick romps through schemas and transformation syntaxes) nor COM nor programming in general - it stays well focussed on what you can do with MSXML.

The bulk of the book consists of chapters describing one particular aspect of XML processing: these are well written and detailed. There is a chapter on performance which offers some useful tips, and the book ends with three case studies - an attempt to show the use of MSXML in real world applications - I found these less interesting than the rest of the book because there is so much to cover to set the context before you get to the XML bits.

There are a (very) few other books talking about using XML within Windows programs, but this is definitely the best though, of course, it is limited specifically to MSXML (no .Net, no 3rd party XML parsers, etc)
