Product Description

Book Description
ADO.NET is Microsoft's latest data access technology and, as an integral part of the .NET Framework, is far more than simply an upgrade of previous incarnations of ADO. ADO.NET provides an extensive set of .NET classes that facilitate efficient access to data from a large variety of sources, enable sophisticated manipulation and sorting of data, and forms an important framework within which to implement inter-application communication and XML Web Services.

This book provides a comprehensive guide to using ADO.NET, with plenty of practical code examples, extensive technical information, and a detailed case study. Whether you are developing Web Applications using ASP.NET, Windows Forms applications, or XML Web Services, this book will show you how to utilize .NET's data access technology to maximum effect.

This book covers:

ADO.NET and the .NET Framework

Using the .NET Data Providers to create connections and execute commands

Using the DataSet to manipulate data

ADO.NET and XML

Using COM Interoperability

Performance and security issues

From the Publisher
Whether you're already developing applications within the .NET Framework, or have experience of developing data driven applications with ADO and wish to make the transition to data centric applications within .NET, then this book is for you. It is aimed at fairly experienced developers, and is not intended for the casual ASP.NET developer or the beginner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Wrox, 11 Jan 2002
By gary_alway@dell.com (Dell Computers Bracknell) - See all my reviews
A very good book with clear examples (in C#). I read this book cover to cover but it could equally be used as a programmers reference manual.
It starts off by explaining all the features of ADO.net and how they differ from ADO and then goes into the application of ADO.net in both windows and webforms.
A must buy for ASP.net programmers who, undoubtably will need to access SQL or Oracle databases.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lot of useful info about reading data... none about updating, 6 Jun 2003
In the classic style of Wrox press this book includes in depth information about everything you need to read data using Ado.Net. The only *very* disappointing feature is that it does only quickly talk very, very superficially about how *updating* data. You will not find any lengthy discussion of pro and cons of using Stored Procedures versus SQL Statements, and about how update your database once your users have consumed and updated their dataset.

This is a major drawback of this book and the main reason for its poor vote.

If you need to write a reporting application this is a great book, but if you're developing a real application that updates data and not only consume them you need to look somewhere else (and maybe let me know if you find a good book about updating patterns and strategies for Ado.net, because I'm still looking for one!).
