Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Beginning ASP.Net is a complete introduction to Microsoft's .Netplatform for Web development. You can program ASP.Net in several languages, but this book uses Visual Basic throughout, presumably because it is the easiest to learn. It is a true beginners' title, and assumes nothing more than a basic knowledge of HTML.

The authors introduce ASP.Net, showing how it is built on Microsoft's .NET Framework and explaining the concept of dynamic Web pages. The early chapters also teach the essentials of programming with VB, starting from the beginning with variables, operators and data types. The book moves on to more advanced programming topics, including event handling, object orientation, arrays and collections. There is a quick XML tutorial, and a guide to database programming with ADO.Net and SQL. The later chapters look at ASP.Net server controls, building reusable components, compiling code into .NET Assemblies, and learning to debug your projects. Finally there is coverage of Web Services, and a chapter on configuring and optimising an ASP.Net environment.

Beginning ASP.Net teaches programming as well as ASP.Net, making it well suited to Web development newcomers. Those with even moderate programming knowledge would be better served by something more advanced. The book is based on beta code, which is not ideal for beginners. Even so, the authors do a good job of explaining ASP.Net and teaching the essential skills developers need in order to put it to work. --Tim Anderson

Book Description
ASP.NET is the latest incarnation of Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) - a powerful server-based technology, designed to create dynamic and interactive HTML pages for your Web site, or corporate intranet. ASP.NET also constitutes a core element in Microsoft's .NET vision, providing web-based access to an immensely powerful new development environment, .NET; in this respect alone, it's a great leap ahead of all previous versions of ASP.

This book will provide you with a step-by-step introduction to ASP.NET using VB.NET, with plenty of worked examples that will help you to gain a deep understanding of what ASP.NET is all about, and how you can harness it to build powerful web applications.

This book covers:
Creating basic ASP.NET pages
Learning the basics of VB.NET
Understanding the concepts of Object Oriented Programming
Working with Data and XML
The ASP.NET Server Controls
Creating User Controls and Components
Exploring the world of Web Services
Configuring your ASP.NET Applications
The future of VoiceXML technologies, including VoiceXML 2.0

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview marred by sloppy editing, 31 Oct 2001
By paulbirch@blueyonder.co.uk (Sheffield, England) - See all my reviews
This book covers all that is required to get up to speed with ASP.NET and the .NET technologies. It starts with simple demonstrations of the new ASP controls slowly builds to take on XML, classes and all the new Web Services that are causing excitement in the developer community.

Unfortunately the book is badly let down by very stupid and annoying typographical errors that in places turn the enjoyable read into a fight to work out what the author is talking about...

All in all, a good technical book let down by the poorest editing in the computer publications arena.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but the VStudio IDE is never used! (3.5 stars), 26 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This book covers a lot of material in an easy to follow, practical style. Each topic is explained, you 'Try it out' with an example, then the example code is explained in detail, which makes understanding the topic easy.

My main gripe with this book however, is that they never once use the Visual Studio IDE. They could have just as easily called the book 'Beginning ASP.NET using Notepad'! They even compile via the Command line! At times it is difficult to work out what to do when trying to use the IDE to achieve the same results as the pure text examples in the book, especially as some of the examples have errors.

I did feel that this book was worthwhile spending time with, but if you're a VB programmer (like me) hoping for a guide to creating ASP.NET apps via the IDE (as I was), you may feel a little dissatisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for anyone!, 31 Aug 2001
I have done a little work asp 3.0 but have decided to have a look at asp.net. Having used several wrox books in ths past I knew that this book would be a safe bet.

It starts off with a quick summary of .net giving the reader an idea about what its all about, followed by an explanation of how to get .aspx files working on your system. Before diving into all the good bits!

Excellent book if you are new to asp or .net I would highly recommend it!
