Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Mug shots of the 16 authors appear on the front cover and a fascinating cross-section of the programming community they look. From bearded arm waving to bespectacled seriousness, all life is here, as indeed is inside Professional Access 2000 Programming, with practically everything you will ever want to know about programming Microsoft's Access 2000.

An overview chapter sets the scene and describes the major differences between this and earlier versions, including a brief comparison of the Jet, MSDE and SQL Server (7.0 not the most recent 2000) database engines. The first chapters cover developing applications from scratch, including a definition of application types and the suitability of Access for their development. Then there's Visual Basic for Applications and Access Objects and database querying with the Query Expression Builder, SQL, DAO (Data Access Objects) and ADO (AxtiveX Data Objects). That's just the first four chapters: there are another 14 and eight appendices that launch into many areas including COM add-ins, security, replication, data on the Internet and creating a help system. Integration with other Microsoft applications gets a chapter too; programmers can add greater functionality to Access applications by calling on Word, Excel and Outlook.

This book is highly opinionated in places (there is an impassioned cry for eliminating error message boxes from your applications) and is occasionally written in the first person though there is no indication of who among the 16 authors wrote which bit. However, a relaxed, approachable and informative tone is maintained fairly evenly throughout, a feat in itself.

Technologies, techniques and methodologies come thick and fast in this excellent book. If you want to know more about programming in Access, look no further. --Mark Whitehorn

Book Description
Access 2000 is the database of choice for many small to medium businesses. Using Access in conjunction with VBA, VB or ASP it is possible to develop sophisticated systems for storing and manipulating business data. Office 2000 and Access 2000 offer many new features that can be used with VB to create great user interfaces and applications. This book concentrates on the issues involved with this type of development, and shows how to create database-driven internet and intranet applications with Access as the underlying datastore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Access 2000 Programming, 14 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Professional Access 2000 Programming is a combination of a training book to heighten your programming skills, and a reference work that will give you a complete overview of Access 2000 and it's related programming environment. It's written in the traditional Wrox style that is so easy to read and usable for developers.

One thing I do miss, is the usual Wrox opening statement where it is described whom the book is written for and if any previous programming skills are assumed. It's not until chapter 3 that you find out VB or VBA programming experience is assumed to make use of the chapter. Don't start on this book without any knowledge of VBA, since it is used in most of the coding examples. If you don't know VBA check out the following books: ISBN 0782123244, ISBN 1861001762 and ISBN 0735605920. An understanding of ADO would also improve on the usability of the book.

To make use of the books fullest potential, have a design plan of your database next to it and make notes or check for errors in your design when you go through the chapters. This helped me to improve on the design of my database.

This book has given me the skills and confidence to start working on client/server solutions and integrating SQL server. It breaks down the entire complexity surrounding Access 2000 and database development to sizeable blocks and tools that I can piece together according to programming and design goals. A must have for any Access programmer on his way to become a true professional.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate for a Beginner, 18 Oct 2001
The level of this book is much lower than its title suggests.
No where near enough on VBA, eg unbound forms, as any Professional programmer needs.
Good staring point, but too much on table design and QBE, for example, for anything that claims to be advanced.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for programmers starting with Access 2000, 14 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This is one of the best programmer-to-programmer books I have read. It is perfect if you have other programming disciplines and are coming to Access for the first time. With the excellent index you can jump around reading topics that are relevant to you at the moment.

I also found the examples very real-world, and the online support at wrox.com first rate. Definately go there and download the source code for the book.
