Product Description

Synopsis
Designing Distributed Applications is all about creating Cooperative Network Applications. Their aim is to promote the re-use of intranet and Internet applications and maintain the viability of applications in the face of change. Using Stephen's 5 Principles of Cooperative Network Application Development, you can create applications that can promote themselves on the network, sharing data and logic with clients of varying levels of sophistication. Using XML to define data exchange in such a way that future applications will also be able to negotiate an exchange format - even in the face of minor programming errors or evolving data definitions. Using LDAP this can take place on a network where we query for the services without knowing their location. The result is a distributed computing environment that will remain robust while users and resources are in flux.

About the Author

A senior software systems architect with Omicron Consulting, he designs and develops systems using C++, Java, JavaScript, COM, and various internetworking standards and protocols. Stephen holds BS and MS degrees in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research interests include distributed object-based computing and the practical applications of artificial intelligence.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's the future, 27 May 1999
By A Customer
This book demonstrates how web sites will be built in the future. LDAP (especially relevant for Windows 2000 development), XML, it's all in there. I would have liked to see more emphasis on Windows 2000, but understandably this is a book about what you can do with today's technology.

Regarding the previous review.. wire efficiency is not everything. XML provides interoperability and can better withstand evolution than COM interfaces. I too was concerned about wire efficiency but from my own experience, the time saved in development thanks to XML far outweighed the performance concerns.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 5 principles are golden, 4 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Both of the previous reviewers have missed the point. This book proposes that the architecture for all distributed systems should follow 5 main principles, and it is the first book that I've seen to identify these issues in a clear and precise way. The book then goes on to demonstrate some ways that you can implement a distributed system which adheres to these 5 principles using today's technology. I recommend this book for senior-level system architects. Programmers who offer expertise on one or two areas may not find the book as interesting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another 'thesis' on building DA's, 11 Jul 2000
By A Customer
Having read this book I was deeply disappointed. Yet another tome on how it may be done, and thats it. The title is misleading when it states 'designing distributed applications' as no metrics on what would be good/bad design, just page after page on a recommended design using XML as the transport mechanism. I found this book a waste of my money.

An interesting book. Dont expect to read this to learn about the underlying technologies (AD, XML, MSMQ etc.) in depth. This is a thesis on building distributed applications. Read more
