Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
With the introduction of ADO 2.0, Microsoft added a myriad of new features to help the application developer get the most from code required to interact with external data sources.

In the ADO 2.0 Programmers Reference, authors David Sussman and Alex Homer provide a handy guide to this most useful of Windows development tools in a way which is both brief and informative.

Commands old and new are laid out in a style reminiscent of the O'Reilly ... In A Nutshell series providing explanations which are to the point, examples which are easy to understand and ever- helpful look-up tables of parameters and sub-options.

In addition, pointers are given for using the command set with development packages including Visual C++, Visual J++, Visual Basic and ASP. A thorough search of the book reveals the vast majority of the examples presented in Visual Basic--fine if you're au fait with conversion to other languages but a bit of a nuisance if you happen to be looking for a quick and easy code segment for one of VB's stablemates.

Coverage of the basics of ADO 2.0 make this book a great reference for users of all abilities, but with the additional coverage of topics including XML data remoting, the creation of Internet- friendly applications and the all-new Data Shaping (recordsets within recordsets) technology, it is an invaluable addition to the expert's bookshelf.

Book Description
This book provides a reference to Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects version 2.0. ADO is the core technology for accessing all kinds of data including relational databases, mail servers, Active Directory, text and other document files, and data in other non-standard formats. It is supplied with many development environments, including Microsoft Visual Studio, C++, Visual Basic, and as part of the Windows NT operating system.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but you have to know ADO to be able to use it, 29 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This is a good reference book, and I am using it a lot. But if you want to learn ADO this should not be your first book...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but misleads on "demonstrates ADO using C++, J++", 3 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Generally good, as it covers much of the detail that the official documentation skips over. Also handy as a quick reference. However, the front cover, stating that it demonstrates ADO in VB, C++ and J++ is *extremely* misleading. I would say that about 99% of the code examples are in VB. There are about 18 lines of C++, which show a very basic example. Although it's not too difficult to translate from VB, more complicated in examples in C++ would have been appreciated. It also lacks coverage of the C++ 'extensions' that MS have provided with ADO to try and make C++ programming easier.
