Product Description

Synopsis
This text provides a comprehensive guide to accessing Oracle databases with Visual Basic. It shows the reader how to use ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) and Oracle Objects for OLE (OO4O) in an object oriented VB program. It also looks at PL/SQL - the language of stored procedures and triggers, and examines how to pass parameters to or return result sets from stored procedures. Throughout the book, the text combines theory and hands on practice. The reader also gets the opportunity to build an application which shows how to guarantee data integrity with OO4O and ADO, using transaction control and stored procedures.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive Enough, 8 Mar 2001
This book covers too many different topics in too little detail. It is also a little outdated. The examples for the (beta at the time) 2.5 version of ADO don't work fully.

If you just want to use ADO to connect to your Oracle database, I would suggest looking at the examples on the Oracle website. This book doesn't cover anything you'll find there.

It is quite well written though, and useful as a quick reference to ADO, Oracle and PL/SQL.

3.0 out of 5 stars A unique book but not very in-depth, 6 Jan 2000
By A Customer
I've got mixed feelings about this book. Yet again Amazon publish a book which covers subject matter that you can't really find anywhere else. This book is not an in-depth information source, more of a summary of the standard information.

The subject matter is very broad. (And maybe that's its downfall). So there is coverage of OO4O, ADO, SQL, MTS, Oracle stored procedures etc.

The book covers the two current approaches for connecting to an Oracle database. ADO, and OO40, and as a beginners guide it will get you started with both. But in terms of ADO there is more detailed coverage in MSDN, and you can get up to speed with OO4O by browsing the type library.

Very good if you are starting out connecting to Oracle and you don't want to learn Access or SQL Server first (In those terms I would give it 4-5 stars). Also good if want to get up to speed with OO4O. Otherwise look in MSDN - it covers it better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, 6 Jan 2000
By A Customer
An indispensible reference and tutorial. It covers everything you need from a VB point of view, including MTS configuration issues, use of stored procedures in ADO. I have not found as good reference for Oracle Objects for OLE anywhere else, including in the Oracle documentation.
