Product Description

Synopsis
The Active Server Library (ATL) is a tool that simplifies the creation of COM components. The latest version , ATL 3.0, marks the blossoming of ATL as a technology. It now covers the entire spectrum of COM applications. COM is the grand unifying technology on Microsoft platforms, providing the core infrastructure for this and the next generation of Windows. ATL is simply the best way to create COM components, combining flexibility and ease of use with great performance. We'll show you how to get started with COM and ATL. More than that, we'll show you how to create useful controls as we back up the theory with ambitious examples in every chapter. This book is aimed primarily at Visual C++ 6 Developers. It is ideal for people who need to get to grips with the principles of COM and the ways in which ATL handles much of the complexity for the programmer.

About the Author
ATL took hold of Richard Grimes while he was part of a team developing a COM-based workflow system. Its elegance and symplicity had a lasting effect on him. Now, although Richard does not live an obsessively pure COM lifestyle, he finds that ATL gives him more time to enjoy his garden. Richard writes and advises on COM and ATL, and can be contacted via email at atl.dev@grimes.demon.co.uk.

George V. Reilly has been a member of the IIS/ASP development team since shortly before ASP 1.0 shipped at the end of 1996. Nowadays he is responsible for IIS performance. He has been doing his best to write tight code since he discovered the BBC Micro in his native Dublin, Ireland in 1982. In retrospect, he has a hard time believing that he found enough time to co-write "Beginning ATL COM Programming", Wrox Press, 1998. He can be reached at gvr@halcyon.com.

Alex Stockton runs the World of ATL website when he's not writing and editing for Wrox Press. He can be contacted at alexs@wrox.com.

Orginally trained as a geologist, Julian got side-tracked into programming in the late 70's, and has never found his way back. After working in computer graphics and the oil industry, he now works for a London-based training and consultancy company, where he spends a large part of his time lecturing on C++ and Windows programming. He can be contacted at julian@groucho.demon.co.uk.

Karli Watson is an in-house author for Wrox Press with a penchant for multicolored clothing. He started out with the intention of becoming a world famous nanotechnologist, so perhaps one day you might recognize his name as he receives a Nobel Prize. For now, though, Karli's computing interests include all things mobile, and upcoming technologies such as C#. He can often be found preaching about these technologies at conferences, as well as after hours in drinking establishments. Karli is also a snowboarding enthusiast, and wishes he had a cat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really for beginners., 28 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Mr Grimes is obviously very knowledgeable about ATL and COM programming. But to my mind he just is not very good at getting the information in his head across to others.

The book runs you through several examples in parrot fashion. And whilst you end up feeling you can do various tasks, you don't always know why you would do them in that way.

Chapter 4: ATL Architecture makes for particularly dry reading and in several places leaves you feeling stranded.

In general you get a whole load of facts thrown your way, but no real understanding.

One does occasionally get the feeling that Mr Grimes is showing off rather than teaching.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beginning ATL 3 COM Programming And DCOM Professionals, 20 Jun 2000
By A Customer
While ago I have received a book from colleague 'DCOM' Professional. Because friend of my who was working on DCOM Project he may thought life will make little easy for him by this book! But he so much frustrated he gave away this book! (I mean to me) I manages to read cover to cover. And also bought 'Beginning ATL 3COM Programming' by Dr. Richard Grimes and his gang.

Both book illustrated quite effective use of COM and DCOM methodology, fully working example to support them only thing I found is the whole subject at initially made little complex and then trying solve the complexity line by line. In fact Beginning ATL 3 COM Programming book muddles the many areas of COM problems and DCOM, then trying to explain whole issue, while you are reading explanation you are virtually lost which problems explanation you on about. This both book has quite effective technical grip on the issue subsequently, if book read with full concentrations it does pay off its valuable knowledge. The both book written for a professional developer of COM/DCOM point of view. But then again if you already professional developer! Why on earth you need these BOOKS to learn this methodology? You already in the business! In my view, this book needs methodical approach in terms of 'Beginners' point of view overloading with so many technical jargons at one go! Although only Ten Chapter in Beginning ATL 3 Programming. Author(s) try to explain many different programming languages at once and usage of V Basic example are frequent to demonstrate usage of COM Client. And Usage of C/C++ example are only Windows Console base application level not much effort taken to demonstrate GUI based effective usage.

However, I very much appreciated book written by Ivor Horton 'Beginning Visual C++ 6' this book has very precise technical approach for beginner and effective COM's example which demonstrate correct usage of COM Clients in much details. I have used this book time to time as reference and some of programming techniques of client programming under Visual C/C++ but NOT in V Basic.

In my view any user have plenty of time available on his hand and an explanation(mysterious), he may buy this books. Because most of the knowledge already available on MSDN online surely it does not explain in much more details but it is an original version of COM/DCOM, who is better to explain? Than Microsoft themselves!

2.0 out of 5 stars Beginning ATL 3 Com Programming, 24 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Until I read the other reviews I thought it was just me that found this book a tad inaccesible. Alot of monotonous detail to get not very far. The agricultural style makes this book more of a reference than a step by step guide.
