Product Description
Book Description
Visual Basic 6 is the new release of the Microsoft's leading windows programming tool. There are over 3.2 million current users of Visual Basic in the world, ranging from novices to programming to experienced developers. This scope reflects the ease of use of VB combined with its powerful potential. Visual Basic is the logical starting point for a career in programming, and a logical choice for programmers moving from non-windows tools such as Cobol and C. Visual Basic 5 sold over 1m copies in 1997, an increase of over 40% over the previous year's sales. This is a large category that is on an exponential growth curve.

Synopsis
Wrox beginning guides cover a scope of material by getting straight to the point. All learning is practical and hands on, using the high bandwidth absorption of detail that only experimentation can deliver. This book is aimed at entry level programmers who are ambitious and want to get all the way to professional techniques in a single step. Its scope also means that it could be useful for programmers coming to VB for the first time, but who have used another, maybe older language.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice beginner text but very poor on advanced topics, 7 April 1999
By A Customer
This is probably the best book to start with for a complete newcomer to VB or programming. I've been using the previous version of this book to teach beginner-VB classes for the last year and intend to use this one.

However, the coverage of advanced topics ranges from sketchy to terrible and a number of language features are ignored completely. You definitely need to pick up a more serious VB book after reading this one (VB6 from the ground up by Gary Cornell is the one I'd recommend) and if you're a programmer, skip this one entirely.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT for Beginners!, 1 April 2001
I brought this book as a reference and have found it most frustrating. I am yet to find a book which will prove simple in explanation but yet detailed enough to get the job done. This book is full of data but there is little information. For example if you want to know how to use the offset function; the book defines it and shows one line of code, but doesn't explain the variations of how you can use it, how it can be used in practice. I guess this book is an either you love it or hate it, unfortunately, I hated it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best VB Book I've Ever Found, 22 Jan 1999
By A Customer
I'm using this book to teach visual design courses at a university level. It is by far the best introductory book on Visual Basic that I've ever seen.

What separates this book from other VB books is the detail concerning the nuts and bolts of using the language. Most books really just explain the stuff you probably could figure out yourself by reading the manuals. This book does a nice enough job of explaining the simple stuff, but it really shines in explaining the things that Microsoft does a poorer job with -- such as data access, creating classes, using ActiveX and even using the Windows API. And all of this is done with clear, concise explanations.

If you are struggling to get past the basics with VB, this book will help.

Don't be afraid. The picture on the front of the book may look scary (Fear not, you can put a sticky label over Mr. Wright's face!) but the contents are very user friendly. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money. Buy Gary Cornell's instead and save!
Too much blas and the treatment of topics is in general very shallow. For a better yet cheaper book, try Visual Basic 6 From the Ground Up from Osborne.
