Product Description

From the Author
Dynamic HTML - a tale of two companies
Originally Alex and myself envisaged one reference guide that covered Dynamic HTML as laid down by the forthcoming HTML 4.0 standard. Of course Microsoft and Netscape both published differing, yet broadly similar outlines of what they intended Dynamic HTML to encompass. In fact Dynamic HTML turned about to be a fairly arbitrary term that referred to everything from the animating of text and images without requiring a page refresh to the absolute positioning of elements. So it came as no surprise that Microsoft and Netscape's versions of Dynamic HTML differed widely. However, you probably didn't expect them to be so different as to be incompatible with one another.

Before HTML was something you could read in any browser, IE3 or Netscape 2 etc. Unfortunately this isn't true in Dynamic HTML anymore. While it's possible to create pages that will function on both browsers, the event handling, the dynamic positioning of elements and other new features introduced necessitate two different approaches and indeed two different books. The book under this ISBN number now deals exclusively with Dynamic HTML as found in Internet Explorer 4, while the book under the number ISBN 1-861001-193 deals with the Netscape Communicator 4 version of Dynamic HTML. Of course we hope that for the sake of a cross-platform web that the two languages will eventually converge, and with the final acceptance of HTML 4.0 as a standard this should happen. But until then, you'll need a book specially tailored for your browsers interpretation of Dynamic HTML - and this is what we provide for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear-cut, right-to-the-point, and perfect!, 11 Mar 1998
By A Customer
I've been creating web pages for about a year and a half. I heard about DHTML, and I wanted to learn it.
Suffice it to say that my second Wrox book was almost as good as the flawless first. I reccomend it for any webmaster with a solid grasp of HTML and a basic knowledge of either JavaScript to VBScript. The clear, concise explanations assume you have no real expereince with DHTML (such as in my case), so it's explained quite well.

BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done guide in a great format., 2 Jan 1998
By A Customer
This book is certainly well done, especially for it's smaller format. A few things should be noted, the most important of which is that you should have prior knowledge of both HTML 3.x and some knowledge of scripting. With out these mental tools, I could easily see how someone could get confused by this book. For anyone intermediate or above though, this book will quickly get you up to speed on IE4 DHTML with clear lessons on the basics, and a fantastic reference. My only complaints really is that the scripting was done in VBScript, not JavaScript.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Good for beginner or intermediate webmaster., 29 Oct 1997
By A Customer
This is a great book. The samples are clear, easy to follow and give you something that you can use in your web development. The last half of the book is a great reference section that I use a lot. It covered the subject very well at the beginner and intermediate level. But, it left me looking for more as I discovered just how powerful DHTML really is.
