Product Description

Synopsis
C++ is an object oriented programming language based on C. ANSI C++ is the long awaited standard for the C++ programming language, defined and ratified by ANSI (the American National Standards Institute) and ISO (the International Standards Organization). C++ is widely used in industry and academia throughout the world. This book covers all aspects of the language including the latest features.

From the Publisher
Knowledge of other programming languages is assumed, although exposure to some form of programming an advantage. Ivor teaches C++ as a first step to real programming, and helps a novice become a competent programmer. The explanations are thorough and leave no gray areas. This also makes the book useful for people with limited programming experience in another language who want a thorough grounding in C++.

This book is not specific to any compiler or computer, making it a valuable learning tool regardless of whether you are using an old 486 with DOS, or the latest Sun SparcStation. It is an easy-going tutorial, based on a proven formula of step-by-step examples, friendly explanations and exercises.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best programming book I've read to date, 21 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I was quite poor in programming until I accidentally picked up this book. I need to buy the author a drink. I owe him the high 'A' grade I got in the C++ module at my university. The book is thorough and extremely easy to understand. It goes through the whole C++ language giving typical examples, writes of problems that might occur in coding on certain ways and suggests the common methods used in the industry to resolve those problems. The only drawback I can think of (if any) is the fact that the examples are not all "Borland" compiler friendly and since that is the only compiler I've got and I'm used to, I have to either take the authors word for the outputs or edit the examples to suit. I can't wait to read all his other titles relevant to my career starting from "Beginning Java 2".

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent If you want to learn AND understand C++!, 15 Jun 2000
By simonellerker@cwcom.net (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
This book will introduce you to the entire C++ language, providing you with a strong understanding, strengthened by the exercises posed at the end of each chapter. The Wrox site also provides downloadable answers to the exercises, as well as the examples used in the chapters themselves. C++ is a difficult language, and this book provides an excellent guide to anyone wanting to learn it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for First Time Buyers, the best book on C++, 11 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I am a college student who took a previous class in C++ so I had a pretty good start, but I had absolutely no experience with Object Oriented Programming, the one thing C++ is the best at. When I bought the book I was hesitant with was its size. At the next programming class i would refer to it as the big red book. Anyway, this book was absolutely perfect in its explanation in Object-Oriented programming. There were somethings i could not get in class, so i opened up this book at it saved my life. I did have a hard time understanding Operator overload and working with templates though. If you want to learn about C++ from the very beginning, TRY THIS FANTASTIC BOOK. Without it, I would not have gotten a B in the class.
