This book details how Hastings, a front-line town coped during World War Two and of its great defiance and fortitude in the face of the enemy. Hastings folk coped with daily wartime hardships of the blackout; rationing; the billeting of evacuees; the evacuation of the town; the constant fear of invasion; and the relentless bombing raids, day and night, leaving in their wake a trail of death, destruction and the apprehension of where and when the next attack would come. The book interweaves more than forty local people's memories with archives and records of national, regional, and local level. Also included are more than eighty black and white photographs.
About the Author
Nathan Dylan Goodwin was born and raised in Hastings, following several generations of his family before him. Schooled in the town, he worked there for a number of years and knows the town well. He left to live in Southern France for a year and then spent two years studying in Manchester, followed by further study at Canterbury Christ Church University where he achieved an Honours degree in Radio, Film and Television Studies. He is currently studying, part-time, for a further Honours degree in History. His other interests include local studies, genealogy, reading, writing, film and travelling.
