4.0 out of 5 stars Good, 6 Sep 2003
By L. Smith "lollypopwow" (UK) - See all my reviews

I bought this book in the knowledge it was the only book available to rock singers in order to save their voice. Having read it, I think the theoretical/instructional stuff which takes up the first few chapters of the book was useful and in most cases effective. The remainder of the book consisted of interviews with various rock vocalists looking for tips...this may have been useful had the tips not been contradicting, not only between vocalists but also with the theoretical chapters. Also a bit long-winded. Nonetheless I think had I not read it my voice would certainly be worse for wear. Good-on the author for addressing this sadly neglected subject.

2.0 out of 5 stars good but standard, 24 Jun 2008

While this book is good what I would recommend is `an introduction to singing with style' I came across this book quite by accident on amazon.co.uk and it has helped me a lot. It goes into great depth about how to develop a great singing voice, vocal projection, vocal clarity and this book even tells you what diet to avoid and what food is good for healthy living it's amazing! If you're looking for vocal stamina then look no further this book has it all!

2.0 out of 5 stars Contradicting - but interesting., 8 Jan 2007
Information in the book contradicts the singers, the singers contradict each other, and the minimal information given on singing in the book itself is not that helpful (tho I suppose it'll help anyone who hasn't tried to use the internet as a resource). Anyone looking for a book with info on how to sing without hurting yourself will get some useful advice.

I do find it lacks a lot though in theory, especially information for bass-baritones and bass. Information for women or interviews with them are also not present, which i suppose is unhelpful for someone who wishes to become the next Brody Dalle. The text does however briefly explain ranges for women. I do question the idea of Robert Plant as a lyric tenor as given by the book as he seems to be an alto whom I can sing along to with ease, but I suppose each to their own vocal weight analysis (rather subjective). Anyone looking for information on the infamous "head voice" beware - I'm convinced the head voice is just falsetto with a blend to chest voice and no audible break, and several of the interviewed singers in the book say something similar. It is just assumed that you should know what it is. Finding the head voice is something the book can help you do, as it will tell you where it begins in your vocal range, in my case it begins at E4, apparently.

My favorite part is when one of the singers says it's impossible to control the diaphragm muscle. Shockingly, I think we all know it's rather easy to control it at will. Still it has some interesting tid bits, like Chuck Billy no longer being able to enter falsetto due to years of excess rasp. How informative - actually useful to know, and a good reason why I'm not going to use overzealous rasp in my singing.
