Product Description
Synopsis
The unique music of Cuba has been the means of a people's survival. Sensual, sexual, soulful and rhythmic, its very emergence is a feat of courage and resilience, where all but government-approved musicians are oppressed and restricted. A combination of West African drumming, Spanish folk quitar, American jazz, rock'n'roll, hip-hop, Son, musica campesina and danzon, Cuban music is the true expression of the Cuban people's history and life. Based in Havana and Santiago de Cuba, with extensive travel through all the towns and villages in between, Stephen Foehr takes us on a unique tour of Cuba's history and culture. Interviewing musicians, spiritual leaders and the closest descendants of each ethnic group, Foehr presents a fascinating image of the complex, vibrant society that is Cuba.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent in-depth view of Cuban music and Society, 17 May 2002
By R. Grant (Coimbra, Portugal) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent book for those who have more than a passing interest in Cuba and its music and would like to get under the surface, not only of the traditional 'son' made famous by 'Buena Vista Social Club', but also of the other forms of music to be heard on the streets of Havana or Santiago: rumba, rap, hip-hop, timba and jazz. There's also a fascinating chapter on 'santeria' and the related batá drumming.

Stephen Foehr has spent long enough in Cuba to have an insider's knowledge: he meets musicians of all ages and genres, who lead him - and us, the readers - to a fuller understanding of the history and characteristics of the different styles - with just the right amount of technical detail - and also of the challenges faced by musicians in a country whose music business is very different from that which we know in the capitalist west.

But it's not just about music. Foehr's journey leads him to muse thoughtfully on
Cuba's economic and political situation - and to question some of the things we take for granted in our consumer-based society. The awakening referred to in the title is the realisation that Cuba is not the repressive communist monstruosity that some people would have us believe it is. Stephen Foehr's Cuba is a country whose people are struggling to retain their independence in the face of severe pressure from outside. Foehr's Cuban's are a people who succeed, despite considerable hardship, in maintaining their good-nature and their sense of humour. It is a picture that anyone who has visited the island will recognise.

If you enjoyed Stephen Smith's 'The Land of Miracles' and would like to go a bit deeper, this is for you. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone interested in Cuba and its music, 19 Aug 2003
A well-informed and well-written book about Cuba and its music. Stephen Foehr is clearly a man who likes talking to people and he finds an enormous variety of interesting and knowledgeable people to talk to (although his exchanges with Havana’s statue of John Lennon are inevitably rather one-sided!) The book gives a very readable overview of Cuban music and its relationship with life and society. He appreciates that nothing in Cuba is entirely straightforward but his affection for the country and its people shines through.
