Product Description

Synopsis

What is a remix? When is a remix not a remix? Does a remix create new music? How can it turn failure into success? From Trevor Horn's infamous remixes of 'Relax' to Moby's Play album and Fat Boy Slim's (aka Norman Cook) remix of Cornershop's 'Brimful Of Asha', money can be made from the art of remixing. Contemporary and unique, this is the first music techniques book to explain how to work a successful remix. Reusing a single track to demonstrate the various techniques, Tim Prochak takes the reader through definitions, software, hardware, file formats, restructuring, effects and tempo changes. He also discusses the commercial aspects and offers case studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spot on remixing intro, 28 May 2002
By A Customer
This book helped me to get to grips with the basics, jargon, software, hardware etc. It also has tutorials and lessons to cover essential skills such as cutting and pasting audio. There are various interviews with prominant remixers which give a good insight into the craft aswell as providing essential inspiration. Latest developments in trends and software are discussed and a CD is contained providing examples and interviews. Overall an engaging and readable introduction to this ambiguous craft.

1.0 out of 5 stars How To Remix?! - you could learn more from a dog, 15 Jun 2007
By Mr. R. NESBITT - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
OK - here are the facts about this book. It is 90% padding and 10% information.

Of the 132 Pages, no less than 45 pages are the 'glossary' containing such gems as

"Beats Per Minute - the number of steady, even pulses in music occuring in one minute."

If you really need to know what beats per minute means [not even BPM!], you're hardly going to be buying a book called How to Remix are you? But this sums up the mixed up approach. Who is it for - I mean it has a section on E-jay but only one page on Compression!

Further padding is included in the form of the most vacuous interviews you could ever wish to read with cod psychology and startling observations such as "human behaviour is a reflection of human beings" [P68].

I regret buying this book - its going straight to the recycling centre to be pulped. I would recommend buying The Dance Music Manual instead by Snoman - I'm still reading this after a year and you can learn so much about remixing from it.
