Useful book from the editor of "Sound On Sound" magazine, 5 Jan 2003
In this nearly 300-page book, Paul White presents the home recordist with all the necessary information and tips required to understanding and using just about any possible type of audio signal processing unit you'd encounter in a recording setup. Those of you who have read anything by Mr. White, be it one of his other books on audio / recording techniques (see the end of this review) or his reviews / columns in the U.K. "Sound On Sound" magazine, will know that he always stays clear of overly technical jargon where it isn't needed, but rather focuses on how to get good results with the equipment that's out there. The sections in this book are the following :
-the mixing console
-patching and patchbays
-equalisers
-enhancers
-compressors/limiters
-dealing with noise
-panning
-digital delay effects
-reverberation
-pitch shifting
-MIDI and effects
-software plugins
-production and effects
-glossary (44 pages !) In each of these chapters, the author takes you through :
-how each piece of equipment / effect works
-recommendations for setting up your equipment
-parameters and how they interact
-maintaining the integrity of the signal, tips for getting the best signal to tape/disk
-both problem-solving and creative use of effects, EQ and dynamics The layout and graphics in this book are clear, making it easy to find what you need. The author managed to cram a lot of useful information into this book's 240 pages (not counting the extensive glossary), and even for the newbie the learning curve will not be too steep. For the beginning and intermediate home recordist, this is a very good and useful book and I highly recommend it. Despite the (inevitable) fact that some of the topics overlap, I also recommend Paul White's "Recording and Production Techniques", which is a good companion to this book, as it has tons of useful tips and info on things like miking, mixing, and so on. Overall I find Paul White's books to be excellent value for money.
