Product Description

Book Description

Blues guitar is the most passionate and emotional style there is. It is also one of the most difficult to teach. But lessons can be learned from the world’s greatest players.

From Robert Johnson through Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green and many more, this book explains each player’s definitive playing techniques, showing how to emulate their solos and develop their tricks to expand your own musical vocabulary.

The 84-track accompanying CD includes two licks from each player, a solo including those licks and a ‘jam track’. Along with a chapter explaining blues chords and the best guitars to use, Giants Of Blues contains everything you need to help you play blues guitar.

3.0 out of 5 stars limited licks, 5 Nov 1999
The book is quite good for the beginner wanting to get an understanding of various blues guitar styles, but the featured solo's are in the form of a single 12 bar chorus, which only scratches the surface.. a 3 chorus solo and more information about the players style would have made this a 5 crown book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for new blues guitarists, 7 Mar 2006
As somone who had never really listened to or played much blues music I found this book to be extremely valuable. I have been playing guitar for years - I am a reasonable player but was self taught - I learned to play most of the stuff I know by ear. I heard Steve Cooper at the Jamhouse in Birmingham recently and hearing him inspired me to investigate blues further. What this book and accompanying audio CD allowed me to do was listen to different 'styles' of blues artists / different riffs on the CD, pick the ones that I thought "I'd like to learn how to do that" then using the music and TAB, work out how it is done, then play along to the backing track. It's simple and straightforward (although not all of it is easy). There is a warning - with only 1 piece per artist, it whets the apetite and I can see a further spending spree coming on some new CD's for the collection !

If you are already familiar with a wide range of blues styles and you can play like the major blues guitarists then I doubt this book would hold much appeal for you. If, however, like me you are just getting into the blues guitar, this book will really help you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lick it up, 11 Nov 2003
By Dave Swan (SLEAFORD, LINCOLNSHIRE United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
As an average guitar player i found the book and CD to be a delight. There is something new to learn from all the featured artists and I enjoyed the short and snappy transcriptions-I think pages and pages of widdling are a real turn off.
Use it as an addition to other teaching aids and you can't go wrong-I've even altered me tunings for a cheeky bit of slide.
Go on put it on your Xmas list
