Product Description

Synopsis
For the last three years of the Vietnam War, the author of this book was Chief Executive of Shell Vietnam. As such he controlled half the country's oil supply which was purchased by the Americans, used by the South Vietnamese, fought for by the Vietcong and often supplied to the North Vietnamese and Vietcong armies through indirect channels. This book is his account of the role of oil in that war. The action takes place mainly in Saigon among ambassadors, generals, politicians, bankers, businessmen, CIA agents, spies and hustlers. Wesseling recounts the behind-the-scenes manipulation and skulduggery which formed a little-known part of the Vietnam War.

4.0 out of 5 stars fascinating mix of big business, politics & Eastern ways, 7 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I really enjoyed Fuelling the War for its Fascinating mix of big business, politics & Eastern ways.Excellent character sketches keep up the momentum. I almost became nostalgic for corporate politics & the difficulties of doing business in the East.I shall recommend it to my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Women ran the economy, 5 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Never before has it become as evident to me that women, downtrodden perhaps, but plucky and inventive, are the mainstay of third world economies, especially during wars. The book vividly describes their role in rice and food production and in the marketing of that other vital commodity: oil. One of the fascinating images is of a Saigon society hostess by night turning into a large scale pig farmer by day. All of this in strict illegality of course, but essential for the supply of South Vietnam. Precise details are given of daring sabotage attacks and of the strategies and initiatives of a Western businessman, well connected but vulnerable,to keep his company afloat in the war zone. The book has obvious and important implications for international business in other regions of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read about the end of the Vietnam war., 3 April 2000
By guyportwin@hotmail.com (Aylesbury, England) - See all my reviews
A fast paced read that reveals much about the end of the Vietnam war and the characters whose decisions brought matters to the finish. The actions of Shell at that time and before reveal how a giant multi-national company dealt with sovereign states as an equal or greater party and also managed to supply both sides at the same time.

Well written and with, I suspect, much information not published before about this pivotal time in recent history.

A surprisingly good read written almost as a novel. We need more history books like this.
