Everywhere I go I am reminded of the truly world class literature that has emanated from Ireland - four noble prizes etc etc. Who in the English speaking world has not heard of Oscar wilde of George B Shaw, of all this rich culture I am very proud, however there is another Ireland, one of experiment and discovery. This book is a story that starts in the caves of Kerry and by use of steam turbines and pneumatic tyres winds its way on a scientific highway to the stars. I thought myself knowledgeable on such issues until Mulvihill exposed me to many and numerous works and discoveries that are attributable to Ireland and the Irish. Her county by county account of the science of the country is logical and well laid out and a good idea for an alternative tour of the Island. This book is excellently presented with bite sized accounts that invites the reader to research further should the mood take you. I was not aware of this superb book until I discovered it in a gift shop, now I need to buy some copies for others as this is one book I will not be lending out.

This book is completely fascinating, and full of unexpected gems: I didn't know that the first syringe was invented by a Dublin doctor, for instance, or that the first guided missile was a Mayo invention.

Mulvihill's style is fabulous: light, witty yet scholarly. Any bookshelves without this book are the poorer for it. Buy it immediately!

Ireland is known as the land of saints and scholars. Irish people also have a great sense of place- who are you and where are oyu from. Few consider Ireland as a country rich in engineers and scientists. Mary Mulvihill's book helps to redress the balance and give a new and fresh perspective to the history of Irish invention. For example, did you know that the steam turbine which provides us with much of our electricity was invented by Sir Charles Parson's who hailed from Birr Co Offaly- or that Birr is the connection between this invention and the 'discovery' of the electron by George Johnstone Stoney. Birr it seems is a scientific hot bed of activity in the middle of Ireland. Having worked in Trinity College Dublin, I read with fascination of the times and classmates of international stars and academic heavy weights such as George Berkeley and George Boole. I dispatched the book to a friend in the US who was nostalgic yet proud of our unknown ingenious heritage. I've to bring 2 extra copies next time!

Mary Mulvihill's style is witty and concise. The geographically led index works well and it is a cross between a travel guide and a parish record. Incidentally, it is also an excellent way to keep the kids from killing each other on a long journey. The definition of science is broad and this lightens the material considerably.

This is definitely one quiet weighty tome to keep in the car and explore in depth and at leisure as I visit from place to place, and definitely one any one of the 'Irish Diaspora' both technically minded and non-technically minded would love for their coffee table.
