The Belgian Shepherd Dog is unique in the world of pedigree dogs, because of the diversity within the breed. There are four very distinct types: the Tervueren, with his profuse double coat, the short-coated Malinois, the glamourous, long-coated Groenendael and the wire-haired Laekenois. Originally bred as a working dog, the Belgian Shepherd has retained much of his working ability, and is used throughout the world as a search and rescue dog, an assistance dog, and as a highly successful police dog where the breed's talents are put to many different uses.
