About the Author
Pockethall is the name of a field in Horwich belonging to Ruth Wilkinson's family and it is also the affix for her world-famous Old English Sheepdogs. Her mother showed and bred Sheepdogs when she was a young girl and that started Ruth's lifelong passion for this lovely breed. The first time Ruth encountered an Old English Sheepdog was when she was about five years old. In the middle of the hearth she saw what she thought was a fluffy black and white ball. When she went to investigate it, she realised that it was a small puppy. From then on, bobtails have been part of her life.
Ruth and her husband, Ray, bought their first Old English Sheepdog in 1969. He was Roncot Blue Cloud, known as Blue. Friends talked them into showing him and, on his first appearance in the ring, in a Minor Puppy class, he was placed fourth out of a class of thirty-six.
Their first champion was Ch. Cornelia of Trimtora, called Lyn, who produced Ch. Pockethall New Shoes, Ch. Pockethall Blue Cloud, Ch. Pockethall Silver shoes and Ch. Pockethall Shoe Shine of Southview. These dogs went on to produce star progeny.
Ruth is a respected international show judge, invited by the Kennel Club to judge and award CCs at Crufts in 2001. Her dogs have been exported around the world and shown successfully in many countries. Through her involvement with Old English Sheepdogs, she and Ray have made friends both at home and internationally.
