5.0 out of 5 stars Not empty at all!, 14 July 2003
This review is from: An Empty Room (Hardcover)
I think that the room is full!
Full of interesting and beautifully developed characters, brilliantly observed family structures and a view on life that make you stop and think. Above all an underlying romanticism that makes you want more than you knew you were capable of!
I loved it!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Depressing and Repulsive, 26 Jun 2008
By J. Bragg (Abu Dhabi, UAE) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: An Empty Room (Hardcover)
This book appears to be populated almost entirely by the damaged and the selfish, and made for a very depressing and tedious read. Although the author's writing style is certainly good enough, I found none of her characters either convincing or likable. Middle class loafers, self-loathing parents, greedy and selfish youngsters - they all scream IMMATURE to me! At least it made me grateful for the fact that my own upbringing was 'normal', as opposed to being raised amongst the insensitive and the misguided in a wealthy North London suburb.

5.0 out of 5 stars If there's one book you read this year..., 17 July 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: An Empty Room (Hardcover)
If there's one book that you read this year, make this it. I can't remember if I have ever seen a debut book this well-constructed, incisive and thought-provoking.

I thought the characterisation excellent, and the story innnovative and enjoyable - I can't recommend it enough.
