Review
Gunther Schmidt is grudgingly celebrating his sixtieth birthday at a party that his faithful wife Marion has organized for him. Exhausted by the idea of being 60, and facing the long downhill slope to his demise, he decides that what he needs to make him young again is a new woman. His friend Klaus has divorced his wife Monika and hooked up with the lithe young Regine, so why shouldn't he do the same? And when he spots Linda, the sexy girlfriend of the mayor's son, he knows the chase is about to begin. First he daydreams about Linda; then he phones Klaus to ask for advice; and soon he is dropping in at her flat. Linda, meanwhile, is first puzzled and then enraged by Gunther's actions. And Marion is not as stupid as she appears. Hauptmann catches the essence of each of her characters without lapsing into stereotype: Marion - passive but intuitive; Gunther - charming, conniving and fixated on Linda; Klaus - consumed by envy of his richer friend; Regine - aware of her new husband's failings, and bored by her new lifestyle; Monika - surrounded by her loyal children, yearning to get her own back. Hauptmann has worked as a TV producer, a scriptwriter and a press officer, and here she pulls her observations together in a delightful, sharp and witty comedy which ultimately boils down to that age-old feud: the battle of the sexes.
