Product Description

Near Mount Etna in Sicily lies Casa Cuseni, a beautiful house built in golden stone - and the home which Daphne Phelps was astonished to find she had inherited in 1947. At the age of 34, war-weary from working as a psychiatric social worker, with barely any Italian, and precious little money, she plunged into a fascinating Sicilian world. Every imaginable problem had to be overcome, not only financial difficulties but local authorities and a house staff who initially felt no loyalty to the new Signorina but who gradually accepted her as a respected member of their small community. To help make ends meet, for many years she ran Casa Cuseni as a pensione and to her doors came Roald Dahl, Tennessee Williams, Bertrand Russell and Henry Faulkner. But just as important to her life and her story are the Sicilians with whom she shared the love and care of Casa Cuseni: Don Ciccio the local mafia leader, Vincenzio, general manservant who recited while he served the meals, Beppe, a Don Juan who scented his eyebrows and his moustache to attract the local girls; and above all the steadfast cook and housekeeper who lives with Daphne still and to whom this book is dedicated.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a warm and heartfelt book., 18 Aug 2000
This review is from: A House in Sicily (Hardcover)
There are many books about life in Italy, but this one is unique. Daphne Phelps recounts her years learning to appreciate and finally love the Sicilians and Sicily. She paints an impressionistic picture of the individuals that have had a impact on her and her life there. You become involved with each one. She has had great compassion for them and their ways of life. She had many obstacles to overcome and did so with grace and the friends she found there. This book is a joy to read and savour.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book, 25 Aug 2007

This is a lovely book written by someone who was obviously a very special person. If you are thinking of visiting Sicily or are interested in the island, this is not a guide book but an excellent place to start. It communicates the true nature of the country and its people and does it with great humour. I couldn't put it down and it was definitely the most interesting book I have read about Sicily. If the Casa Cuseni was taking paying guests now, I would definitely stay here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Daphne loves Sicily, but I want to know more...., 9 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Daphne Phelps has spent more than 50 years in Sicily and she waxes lyrical about her surroundings, hardly surprising! But as a reader I am frustrated by her maddenly sketchy descriptions of her guests. I want to know what Henry Faulkner liked for breakfast! I am also curious to hear how she handled day-to-day life in Taormina. The long-winded banks? The post office? The plumbing problems? One the whole, not bad, and I am envious of her beautiful home.
