Product Description

Review

"The intensity, texture, and strange density of Art Wolfe's photographs are truly astonishing" Peter Matthiessen; "Art Wolfe's photographs are magically composed and stunningly beautiful. Like nature poetry of the first rank, they pull our emotions closer to some of the most charismatic and (sadly) endangered animal species of the world" E.O. Wilson

Product Description

After the resounding success of The Living Wild, Art Wolfe has turned his keen wild-life photographer's eye on Africa. The result is a book which assails all the senses. One can gaze the wide horizons in the unusually large landscape images. It is as if one could hear the sounds of thousands of animals moving across open plains, taste the heat in the air, smell of dampness foretelling rains to come, and the touch of the earth beneath naked feet. In five chapters, life in the savannah, the woodlands, the rainforest, the wetlands and the desert rises in front of the readers' eyes.

3.0 out of 5 stars could do better, 8 Jan 2002
Beautiful photography and well presented. Far too concerned with southern and eastern africa to deserve the title "Africa", with well over half the photos coming from Tanzania and Kenya. All the photos look fab though and the "notes from the field" section at the back is an important inclusion. I'll be waiting for the sequel "The rest of Africa" eagerly.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is far ahead of its competitores, it's amazing!, 10 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Africa (Hardcover)
This book is full of sharp wild-life images and carefully composed photographs of local people combined with stunning scenery shots all neatly arranged, creating a wonderful celebration of 20 years of nature photography by Art Wolfe. Do not think this is just another book about the second largest continent, I mean, this book is really impressive. I just came back from a vacation in South-Africa and I can assure you that non of the books in the book stores there came close in capturing the African animal kingdom in such lively, breath-taking pictures, presenting so much of the diversity of the area's ecosystem.

Jane Goodalls beautiful foreword opens the book and is followed by five chapters, which were divided according to habitat type (Savannah, Woodland, Rain -forest, Wetland and Desert).
Another important feature is the informative text commentary, written by Michelle Gilders, which really broadened my mind

I was familiar with photographs of Art Wolfe before purchasing "Africa" and while discovering this masterpiece of Mr. Wolfe, I jumped on the bargain - believe me, it's worth every penny. The production costs aren't low, Because it is a thick book, with large pages and is printed on excellent quality paper - which makes it a pretty luxurious book. No doubt this is a top-quality work.
Often I find myself looking at a few of the many eye-catching pictures, inspired by the world that awaits out there. This book is just amazing! (Definitely 5 Star material !!!)
