5.0 out of 5 stars The algebra of existence, 9 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Platonov's stories are quite unique. They are apparently simple, but their simplicity is misleading.
In many ways they resemble Ovid's mythological tales which, apart from their obvious charm, encompass and represent  - symbolically speaking - the contours of experiences familiar to all of us in our own individual lives. In a sense Platonov has written the algebra of existence. His protagonist is a kind of Everyman.
Because stories like "The Return" or "The Potudan River"  are so remarkably original, most attempts to explain or interpret them are invariably reductive; that is, unhelpful. In other words, because  Platonov's scope transcends the ideas of those who preceded him, their terms become quite useless and obsolete  when applied to his artistic achievements.
What is particularly attractive about Platonov is the manner in which he tackles common problems, without sacrificing in the process all aspects pertaining to our inner lives. On the contrary, our inner lives interest him and he is most revealing when writing about them.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Russia's greatest writer of the last century, 16 Jan 2008
By R. H. Chandler (London England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As Platonov's main English translator, I regret that this volume of stories, which I consider the best introduction to Platonov's work, consistently sells less than the other volumes. Firstly, it includes stories in a variety of styles and moods and from the entire span of his career as a mature writer; secondly, several of these stories are among his very finest works. The dislocated and more obviously innovative language of the novels, 'The Foundation Pit' and 'Chevengur', have so far attracted more attention from literary critics and historians, but behind the apparent simplicity of such stories as 'The Return' lies extraordinary compassion and wisdom. Penelope Fitzgerald once listed 'The Return' (in The Moscow Times) as one of her 'three great works of Russian literature of the millenium'. For my part, I can say that it is one of a small number of works of literature that have more than once helped me to live my life better. In the words of John Berger: 'Platonov's stories do not add to the grief being lived. They save something.'
