I have bought several different guide books covering the South and specifically the Languedoc region (I love this area).

This is by far and away the best for the types of thing's I enjoy: the history, the scenery, the little restaurants at the side of the road.

I like the way this book is laid out, and written.

I can't be as enthusiastic as the newspaper reviewers.

I found this guide to be no more than a well-written listings magazine - it contains little more for the traveller than tourist office information.

Some of the advice given could be called dangerous for the unwary traveller. For instance, the guide says the safest time to drive in the Alpes Maritime is at dusk. Have the authors tried this? You do not want to be on those fast, switchback roads with heart-stopping drops, in fading light.

By all means read the introductory articles on history, culture etc. - treat it as pre-travel research - but do yourself a favour and don't burden your luggage with this book. Leave it at home.

What a fab book - all you ever need for a great trip to this lovely area of France. Highly readable and user-friendly with great selections and handy highlighted sections for accomodation at a glance.Fascinating snapshots of history with maps and superb colour photos. Thoroughly recommend it...although maybe photocopy the bits you really want, due to its size!
